Best Incident Response Companies 2026: Ranked by What's Documented, Not What's Claimed
Search for the best incident response companies and you get two things. Vendor blogs that rank themselves first. And listicles that rank by adjectives. Neither survives contact with a real incident. What survives is evidence: which firms carriers' claims teams keep re-hiring, what the firms document about their own capability, and how their claims check out. This page ranks the market's most-documented IR firms. It tells you exactly what the ranking can and cannot say.
Key takeaways
- "Best" is an opinion. Documentation is not. The ranking below uses one dataset: carrier-published panel pages. A firm on a carrier panel was vetted by a claims team that pays for the response. Repeat presence means re-hiring.
- Five IR firms appear on six of ten published carrier panels. CrowdStrike, Arete, Booz Allen Hamilton, Charles River Associates, and Epiq. No firm appears on all ten.
- Documentation is not a quality score. Panel presence shows sustained trust from claims teams. It says nothing about fit for your environment, your insurer's panel rules, or the response time you need.
- Breach counsel ranks separately. Mullen Coughlin and Norton Rose Fulbright also sit on six of ten published panels. But they are counsel, not IR firms. We cover that role separately.
- The right firm for you may not be on this list. The long tail is real. 108 of 158 documented panel firms appear on exactly one published panel. Fit beats fame. The choosing guide is how to test for it.
What we ranked by, and what we refused to rank by
The dataset: the published cyber panel pages of ten carriers and MGAs (AIG, AXA XL, AXIS, Beazley, Chubb, CNA, Coalition, Liberty Mutual, QBE, Travelers). We read them October 6-7, 2026. Every relationship is documented and source-cited. We ranked firms by how many of those published panels document them. We counted only firms with a documented DFIR or incident response role.
What we did not rank by: awards, marketing claims, revenue, headcount, or our opinion. We also did not rank "quality" or "outcomes." Panel pages disclose neither. Inventing a quality score would be the same sin as the adjective listicles.

| Booz Allen Hamilton | 6 | DFIR | Booz Allen Hamilton |
| Charles River Associates | 6 | DFIR, ransomware | Charles River Associates |
| Epiq | 6 | DFIR, notification and call center | panel-side documentation |
| Mandiant / Google Cloud | 5 | DFIR | Mandiant |
| MOXFIVE | 5 | DFIR, readiness, restoration | MOXFIVE |
| Kroll | 5 | DFIR, notification, identity | Kroll |

Counts come from our panel data study. It also covers the 148 firms further down the distribution, the category mix, and what the pages publish versus withhold. Most of the firms above also carry directory profiles here. CrowdStrike's profile is the deepest documented: eight carrier panel relationships in the directory's wider tracked set, which extends past the ten carriers in this study.
What this ranking cannot tell you
Three gaps, stated plainly.
Fit for your environment. A firm paneled for enterprise Windows estates is not automatically the right call for an OT/ICS site, a cloud-native platform, or a medical device maker. Environment fit is the first filter in the choosing guide. The directory splits verticals for exactly this reason.
Response time. Panel pages do not publish SLAs. A firm can be on six panels and still take twelve hours to mobilize. Where firms publish response commitments, the directory documents them. Where they do not, we record that rather than guessing.
Price. Panel terms are negotiated and confidential. For what retainers cost and how to get comparable numbers, see the retainer cost guide.
How to turn this list into a shortlist
The ranking is a starting set, not an answer. Three steps:
- Filter by your constraints. Insurance panel rules first if you carry cyber coverage. Many policies cover panel-firm costs fully. Then environment. Then response requirement.
- Ask the same questions of three to five firms. The choosing guide lists them. A structured RFP gets them answered in a comparable format instead of three sales decks.
- Check the evidence on each claim. Certifications held by named individuals. Panel relationships with sources and dates. Engagements documented by sector. Where a claim carries no source, treat it as a claim.
Frequently asked questions
Who are the best incident response companies in 2026? The honest answer is: the ones whose evidence matches your requirements. The most-documented by carrier panel presence are CrowdStrike, Arete, Booz Allen Hamilton, Charles River Associates, and Epiq. Each sits on six of ten published carrier panels as of October 2026. That is documented trust. It is not a quality score.
Is CrowdStrike the best incident response company? It is the most widely documented on published panels. That reflects claims teams' sustained re-hiring across carriers. Whether it is best for you depends on your environment, your policy's panel rules, and the response terms you need. The choosing guide tests that.
Are the biggest names always on insurers' panels? No. Some widely known firms sit on fewer published panels than mid-size specialists. Some carriers publish no roster at all. Absence from a published panel is not evidence of absence from the market.
What about ransomware negotiation specialists? Firms like Coveware occupy a specific role: extortion negotiation and payment logistics. They are documented in the directory, though negotiation relationships are less often published as panel roles. Our ransomware negotiation guide covers when that capability is the one you need.

Best Operational Technology (OT) Incident Response Firms 2026: Ranked by What's Documented, Not Claimed
Search for OT security companies and you get two bad options. Vendor listicles rank whoever pays them. Vendor blogs rank themselves. The OT market deserves better, because a wrong pick costs production hours. This page lists the OT incident response firms we could verify from their own published services. It puts them in the order the evidence supports. Where the evidence is thin, it says so.
Coalition vs Chubb Cyber Insurance: What Their Published Vendor Panels Actually Show
Both carriers publish lists of the firms they trust for incident response. The two lists are built very differently. This piece uses their own published data. We show what we checked and when.
