UN R155 CSMS Certification, Explained

UN Regulation No. 155 requires vehicle manufacturers to hold a certified Cybersecurity Management System before new vehicle types can receive type approval in markets adopting the regulation, EU, UK, Japan, Korea, and expanding.

The CSMS is organizational: governance, risk management, testing, monitoring, and incident response across the vehicle lifecycle. The audit examines the system operating, not the documentation describing it.

The CSMS audit

An approval authority (or its technical service) examines whether the management system exists and operates: program-level TARAs, incident records, validation evidence, supplier management. Firms here have sat through KBA, RDW, VCA, and MLIT processes, the directory records which authorities, because expectations differ.

R156: the software update half

UN R156 requires a Software Update Management System: integrity-protected updates, rollback capability, and update compatibility management. Firms capable of the R155 CSMS with R156 SUMS in the same engagement prevent the seam between the two regulations becoming an audit finding.

Type-approval track records

The strongest predictor of audit success is prior audit success with your authority. Directory records show programs supported through KBA and RDW approvals, fixed-fee supplier audits passed on first attempt, and EV startup CSMS build-outs completed inside two quarters.

Frequently asked questions

Does UN R155 apply outside the EU?

Yes, 1958 Agreement contracting parties adopt it: UK, Japan, Korea, and others. Market-specific approval requirements make authority experience a directory filter, not a nice-to-have.

Can a startup certify a CSMS?

Yes, with a scoped build-out. Directory records show EV startup programs reaching audit-ready in roughly two quarters with fixed-fee engagements, the CSMS scales with your organization rather than requiring OEM-scale governance on day one.

How long does CSMS certification take?

System build-out plus audit: roughly two to six months for a prepared organization, longer from zero. The RFP template captures program facts (vehicle types, automation levels, target markets, SOP dates) so firms quote realistic schedules.
